Grohl Would have Quit Nirvana?

September 28th, 2011 | By ryan-kazr in Uncategorized | No Comments »

An upcoming biography of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl claims that the former Nirvana drummer nearly quit that band in 1993 after hearing Kurt Cobain make disparaging remarks about his playing while on a plane from Seattle to Los Angeles. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, Grohl is quoted as saying, “Kurt was kinda f***ed up. And I heard him talking about how s***ty a drummer I was. I just want to f***ing play music. I don’t want to have to deal with any of this craziness.”

Cobain apparently added that he wished Grohl played more like Mudhoney drummer Dan Peters, who actually did a short stint in Nirvana before Grohl came along in 1990.

Grohl was calmed down by manager Alex McLeod and put aside any thoughts of leaving the group by the time the flight landed, but the author of the book, Paul Brannigan, thinks Grohl would have eventually left anyway if Nirvana’s career had not been cut short by Cobain’s death in 1994.

Brannigan explained, “Dave was very aware that Nirvana was Kurt and (bassist) Krist (Novoselic)’s band, and that as lifelong friends, they shared a bond which went beyond music. At some point I feel that Dave would have parted company with the pair.” The book, titled This Is A Call: The Life And Times Of Dave Grohl, hits stores this December.

Just Another Reason Why The Foo Fighters Are Great

June 15th, 2011 | By ryan-kazr in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Foo Fighters are known for their sense of humor and that extends to the band’s latest tour rider, which has been obtained by The Smoking Gun. A normal rider usually sets out the group’s requirements for every performance it gives, and some artists are known for their ridiculous or obnoxious demands on concert promoters. The Foos take that idea to new heights of absurdity in their new rider, which includes a section in the form of a children’s activity book.

Among the items in that section are coloring book pages, drawings of all the Foos, a word hunt for “catering don’ts,” a maze to get guitarist Chris Shiflett to the catering area and more. The “activity book” was put together by longtime Foos tour manager Gus Brandt. The rest of the rider also includes jokes, useless facts, pop culture references and other bizarre nuggets of surreal humor.

One page in the activity book — which, by the way, is titled “Field Guide To Food Coloring Book And Activity Pages” — presents drawings of 22 items and asks catering personnel to circle the ones that belong in a salad.

Grohl Talks Playing teen Spirit

April 25th, 2011 | By ryan-kazr in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl revealed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly that he and former Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear played the Nirvana classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” together for the first time in nearly two decades while the Foos were recording their new album, Wasting Light. Grohl explained, “The day we finished the record, we had this club gig to do. It was in this little bar down the street, a surprise show. I invited Krist to come down and play a song. We wanted to play ‘Marigold,’ which was the B-side of the ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ single, and it was the only Nirvana song I sang.”

Grohl continued, “So we go to the studio that day to practice. We run though the song once and then Krist says, ‘Hey you guys want to do some moldy oldies?’ Me and Pat look at each other and go, ‘Okay, what do you want to do?’ He says, ‘Let’s do ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ I hadn’t played that song in 18 years . . .We ended the song and look at each other like, ‘That was strange.’ We walked out and (the studio manager) looked at us and said, ‘Yeah, it sounded pretty good. You guys should keep that.’

Quick Hits

A new exhibition of Nirvana memorabilia will go on display at Seattle’s Experience Music Project from April 16th to the 22nd. The show, called “Nirvana: Taking Punk To The Masses,” will pay tribute to the legendary group and its late singer, Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994. Among the items on display will be pieces of the first guitar Cobain ever destroyed onstage, a yellow sweater he wore regularly and handwritten Nirvana lyrics. Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic said in a statement, “It’s great that there will soon be a collection that celebrates (Cobain’s) contribution to music and culture. There’s a story with Nirvana at its center, but it’s a story that also includes the many people, bands and institutions that make up a music community.”

Foo Fighters have been confirmed as the musical guests for the April 9th edition of Saturday Night Live, which will be hosted by actress Helen Mirren. Frontman Dave Grohl holds the record for most musical appearances on SNL, having performed with the Foos, Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, Tenacious D and Tom Petty. His latest appearance comes three days before the April 12th arrival of the new Foo Fighters album, Wasting Light. In other news, the list of theaters screening the new Foos documentary Back And Forth for one night on April 5th has been announced at foofightersfilm.com.

Add Grohl to the List of People Who Don’t like Glee

March 21st, 2011 | By ryan-kazr in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has slammed Glee creator Ryan Murphy in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying that his band won’t be letting their tunes onto the show anytime soon. Grohl explained, “It’s every band’s right, you shouldn’t have to do f***ing Glee. And then the guy who created Glee is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his f***ing show . . . f*** that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee.”

Grohl continued to slam Murphy, who recently ragged on Slash and Kings Of Leon for not allowing Glee to use their music. Grohl said, “The Glee guy, what a f***ing jerk. Slash was the first one. He wanted to do Guns N’ Roses, and Slash is like ‘I f***ing hate musicals. It’s worse than Grease.’ Then (Murphy’s) like, ‘Well of course he’d say that, he’s a washed up ol’ rock star, that’s what they f***ing do.’ And then Kings Of Leon say, ‘No, we don’t want to be on your show.’ And then he’s like, ‘Snotty little a****es…’ And it’s just like, ‘Dude, maybe not everyone loves Glee.’ Me included.”
